Moving to New Location

I have had a lot of success with this blog and have been so grateful for all your support, however, I have had a difficult time keeping up with A Pleasant Sunday because I also have a crafting blog, a family blog, and then throw that in with family responsibilities, church callings, and daily life. So, I have decided to merge my two idea blogs together. Simplify.

I am really excited to do this because my sister will be team blogging with me. Several of the ideas I shared on this blog were hers. She's very talented and had a real knack for creating on a budget. I am sad to do this because I will miss having a blog dedicated to just teaching our children the gospel.

I will be leaving this blog intact, but will not be updating it. We will be posting all new ideas, both spiritual and not, on Cookie Nut Creations. I have moved nearly all previous Pleasant Sunday posts there. I hope that all viewers will feel inclined to follow us on Cookie Nut Creations.

I loved this idea because it's a great reminder. She posted this on her Crafting Chicks blog for a visiting teaching handout. This is something that is good for all of us. For young children, you could tone down the quotes for easy reading. You could have the sacrament prayers, John 3:16, or even simple words like Christ, garden, and other relevant words to the atonement, death, and resurrection.

Obviously, for younger children, I would suggest putting it into something a little more protected. I would recommend putting it in one of those 4x6 mini photo albums. For her instructions and quotes, visit here.

I have a soft spot for causes, especially since I have run a fundraiser for my cousin. I think it is important as members of the church and as people to give to others in need what we can.

I don't know this boy or anyone involved, but I know how hard it is to see someone you love struggling and being unable to afford life altering treatment. I don't live in Utah and won't be able to attend this event and I know that some of you have the same issue, but there is a donate button on their blog...do what you can.

And the winner is...Tricia with her Journal Jar. I loved this idea for a lot of reasons. I think this would be great to do on a yearly basis with our kids individually or as a family until their old enough. All you have to do is answer one question a day and...voila...you have a journal! How easy is that?!

Below are some questions that Tricia had to go in the jar. This would need to be added to if you wanted to have one for everyday of the year. And the questions would need to be tailored to your family and/or each individual.

Noah Mini File Folders

I made these two mini file folders games and both happen to be Noah based. The first one, I took a coloring page and deleted a lot of extras, added a bigger rainbow, and colored it. BTW - I cut my rainbow colors by two (red/orange, yellow/green, and blue/purple) it would be too hard to cut out each color, and place on velcro or magnets on such a small space.

The other, I can't take credit for. I found it for FREE at Mormon Chic. I only put on my insert page and cover page, since I wanted mine to look similar to my others. If you want to make it a mini file folder, you will just need to make sure that instead of a full page, you minimize it to half a page. The Testimony of The Book of Mormon

I apologize for my absence, but I actually have been absent. I have been home very little over the last month and it feels good to get back on track.

During the October General Conference, Jeffery R. Holland gave a powerful talk...which was really an amazing testimony of the devinity of The Book of Mormon. I have always love Elder Holland's talks and I have a strong testimony of Joseph Smith and The Book of Mormon, but his message struck me. It struck us all. I don't believe that any honest person could deny his resolve and his powerful words when they were spoken.

My posts are geared towards teaching our children, and this is no exception. I encourage everyone to have a FHE lesson on the truthfulness of The Book of Mormon and to show them this video. I think that it is imporatnt for our children to see the testimonies of the apostles and prophets, especially one that is geared to an important key of the gospel.

I have a new mini file folder game. For those who have 'My gospel ABCs Book', this may look a little familiar. I figured, why not make a file folder game for a little bit older children.

Take a file folder and cut it at the crease. This way I can get two file folder games out of one folder. I also used magnets. I like velcro, but file folder games make it louder than if it's on fabric. I like magnets because they're quiet. I used the magnet roll where you can cut you own size (very cost effective).

Just copy the images below into photoshop or even a word document and print them off. Cut them out. Paste the filer folder game cover, scripture clue page, and the game board page into the file folder. Cut out the individual Day game pieces and laminate them. Take the file folder to get it laminated at FedEx/Kinkos, Staples, etc. Be sure to fold the file in half and get a really good crease before you get it laminated. Staple a plastic bag to the back to put your pieces in. Hope you like it.

First off, I want to say thank you to all of you! I have seen that a lot of hits on Lexie's ONH Journey blog have come from here. I'm so thankful for those of you who have taken the time to learn more about Lexie, her condition, and how to help her reach her goal.

Lexie is my best friend, and she also happens to be my cousin. She's always been an inspiration to me and an anchor in my life. She's suffered her whole life, but never let it stop her from living life to the fullest and accomplishing things that most would have thought impossible for her to do. I have been waiting my whole life for her to have this opportunity.

I got really emotional over all the hits on her blog, and I'm emotional as I write this. Lexie deserves all of the support that you have given and much more. Thank you.

Now on to the fun stuff.

Now that December is right around the corner, I thought that we would start it off with this. In the Dec. 2004 issue is this nativity scene. I collect nativities and thought that this would be good to make into a felt and flannel board for the kids. You could also laminate them and put magnets on the back, make a diorama, or just about anything. Have fun.

This Friend only gave the idea, so I made it easy for you. This is a great craft for the kids. I'm doing my own twist. Instead of just stuffing it with newspaper, we are going to leave it hollow and put a slit in the top. The weeks before Thanksgiving, put in strips of paper with something you're thankful for. Whenever you think of something new, put it in. Open it up on Thanksgiving Day and read them.

General Conference Recap

My son brought this home from church on Sunday and thought it was an awesome idea especially for older children. It has a list of all the conference talks (even the ones from priesthood) and gives the gist of their talk with a small snippet. It would be great to tape on the bathroom mirror to give us a little reminder of what the brethren have instructed us. It would be great for a lesson on remembering what the prophet and apostles have said or maybe use it for (modern) scripture study.

Nativity Cube

Christmas is coming much sooner than we think. Here's a great idea, submitted by Mckay. She has come up with a new take on the nativity. I have seen wood/vinyl nativities before, but I absolutely love this idea.

You could use this for FHE, you can take it to sacrament meeting, use it during your Christmas scripture study, or add it to your collection of nativities. It's unique and kid friendly. It's a 4x4 square block with separate images of the nativity scene on it's 6 sides.

Priesthood Organization

The Gospel Principles manual is another great FHE tool. The lessons are geared to introducing investigators and new converts to the gospel principles (hence, the title). This is why the lessons in this manual are great for teaching our children. Unfortunately, there aren't ideas to keep the children occupied. This requires a little planning and creativity. However, Chapter 14 is on Priesthood Organization. This can be a loaded topic for our children, but the manual give this diagram which can be done in a couple of ways. You could simply print this image off and have the children color it. For a little older children you could remove the words and have the children find which space goes with which name. Or you could do what I did.
I printed the image on to three different color papers. Brown for the "roof", cream for the "walls", and gray for the "steps". Then I cut out the images and laminated them. This way the children can put it together like a puzzle or can build it starting with the "foundation".

Latter-day Prophet 2

My kids love playing our Latter-day Prophet Memory Game. Our oldest has even started to remember some of their names. It easy to match pictures, but we thought it might be fun to try something else. We take the same cards and play Latter-day Prophet "Go Fish". We still show the pictures because they are still learning, but it gives us the opportunity to say the prophets names. Instead of saying, "Go Fish", we say, "Follow the Prophet". The kids have a blast with both, so we get two games for the price of one!

"Felt" the spirit

Felt stories and flannel boards is something I always remember from my primary experience growing up. These are great for FHE, but have you ever thought to take them to church? You could easily make a small flannel board or you can stick it on the back of the pew. That's right, if your pews are the ones that have the fabric on the back, the felt will stick.

There are places you can buy LDS felt stories for, well, not cheap. This is a time to be creative! Felt is a very cheap fabric. You can find free images all over the net. An iron and some iron on paper and vuala! Just make sure not to make your peices small because they don't work as well.

Or you can always copy the images onto cardstock and laminate them. The kids love playing with them as well.

The First Vision

It is important for our children to gain their own testimony of the first vision at an early age. This article is perfect for FHE or you can even make it your family scripture study. I just attended a women's symposium for my stake. The theme was "For the Strength of You" and we all received our own pamphlets. These have been made specifically for the Young Men and Young Women's program, but it's standards are for all. As I was looking through it, I thought that this would be a great tool for FHE. They have several topics that can be taught to all ages. Sexual Purity and Dating are topics that can be held off until they are age appropriate. There are pictures, they are short, and they are gospel essentials. For the next 16 weeks, I will be teaching my young children the vital values they need not only in their youth, but throughout their lives.

"We promise that as you keep these standards and live by the truths in the scriptures, you will be able to do your life’s work with greater wisdom and skill and bear trials with greater courage. You will have the help of the Holy Ghost. You will feel good about yourself and will be a positive influence in the lives of others. You will be worthy to go to the temple to receive holy ordinances.

Cheaper Alternative

A lot of these ideas call for paper and laminating so that they can last. Here's a couple of ideas to make things a little bit cheaper!

This is expensive at first, but investing in your own laminator will save you a lot of money. Going to UPS, FedEx, or Staples to get your stuff laminated is going to run you about $2 per sq. ft. That'll add up quick. I'd recommend getting one that can run with and without heat and can fit a standard size paper. If you don't think that you'll be laminating that much, then I recommend you use the Scotch Self-Laminating Pouches. They're the best quality for the decent price.

Buying cardstock for can be really expensive, and some printers have difficulty printing on the thicker paper. Buying construction paper can be a great alternative. They are larger than 8.5" x 11.5", but if you don't mind trimming it to fit...it can save you a lot of money. There's a lot more paper for a lot less money. It's not as thick as cardstock, but it's thicker than printer paper and works well with printers. You can use the left over trimmings for lots of creative ideas.

Trying to be Like Jesus

"What would you do if Jesus were here?" Instead of asking our children what they would do, invite the Savior in your family prayer. Get a picture of the Savior praying and have it near when it's prayer time. The Savior is "the light and life of the world" and has set the perfect example. Let your children see it!

Plan of Salvation

It's always a great idea to have a plan of salvation diagram. It's a great missionary tool. But how fun would it be to make it a game. Using age appropriate gospel trivia, this game can be used for any age group. Divide into two groups and make your way from the Pre-Mortal life all the way to the Celestial Kingdom. If you want to use the arrows, make sure you print off enough.

Revalation Triangle

This is another great idea from my sister, Camie! When she was serving a mission, she made a diagram to show how we receive revelation. With General Conference coming, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to teach this for our FHE lesson. It is important for our children to understand that when the prophet speaks that he is speaking in behalf of our Father in Heaven.

A Family That Prays Together

We've all seen the pictures of families kneeling in a circle in prayer, where all the children's arms are folded, eyes closed, and heads bowed. Yeah right! When does this happen in our homes? Arms are poking each other, heads are pointed at the ceiling while their eyes are rolled in the back of their heads. Prayer time can be a difficult time for children...and the parents who want to tape their arms together.

I'm not promising that this will transform your children, but I do promise that it brings the spirit into my heart towards my children. In family prayer, pray for each individual. I am probably preaching to the choir, but it helps in so many ways. It helps me to think about the members in my family and what their needs are, it lets them know that I love them and want to be a part of their lives, and it teaches them to think about and pray for others.

The Presidency Message in the March Ensign is given by Pres. Thomas S. Monson and is focused on praying as families. He says,

"As father hears his tiny son pray unto God that his dad will do the right things and be obedient to the Lord’s bidding, do you think that such a father would find it difficult to honor the prayer of his precious son? As a teenage daughter hears her sweet mother plead unto the Lord that her daughter will be inspired in the selection of her companions, that she will prepare herself for a temple marriage, don’t you believe that such a daughter will seek to honor this humble, pleading petition of her mother, whom she so dearly loves? When father, mother, and each of the children earnestly pray that the fine sons in the family will live worthily that they may, in due time, receive a call to serve as ambassadors of the Lord in the mission fields of the Church, don’t we begin to see how such sons grow to young manhood with an overwhelming desire to serve as missionaries?"

It also never hurts to pray that they will be reverent during the prayer and ask for the presence of the spirit or to pray that the kids will eat their food at meal time prayer. The possibilities are limitless.

The Friend

The Friend Magazine is always full of ideas, and if you don't get The Friend you can print the activities online. I came across this one and loved it.This is great because it could be a small lesson on prayer, an FHE activity, a General Conference activity, or something to keep them occupied in Sacrament Meeting. Puzzle Time

I made this puzzle to go along with this primary lesson, but you can make one to go with any lesson you can think of. Just make a puzzle template (or use the one below) and print it over any image. This is another great activity for Genaral Conference.

Print it over the image of the first vision to teach about the restoration of the gospel. Discuss how many churches had "pieces" of the gospel, but now that the gospel is restored we can enjoy the "big picture".

The Story of Jesus Christ

With General Conference coming up we need something to keep our children busy but also focused spiritually. I came across this activity found in the March 2008 Friend. I printed mine on cardstock and laminated it, but you can make it a more kid friendly activity. Very simple. Print it off, have the kids cut them and hole punch them, and you have a flip book. Then later you could use it as a short lesson or a quiet book for Sacrament Meeting. Click here to print it off. Click here to see where I got the idea.

Latter Day Memory

She also mentioned that it would be a great game during General Conference. That's coming up fast, but you have plenty of time to make one for your family!

Temple Prepartion Game

Temple preparation starts now! I scanned my images if you want to use them or you could use it as a template to make your own. The great thing is that you can always make different Temple Preparation Cards the older your kids get.

"...always remember him..."

During the sacrament we promise to "always remember him". It's hard to remember him when the kids are only quiet when the bread or water is actually in their mouths. I caught myself saying to my children, "It's time to think about Jesus," but children need visuals!
I made this sacrament time book for my primary class a couple of years ago and expanded it for my family. Images of the Savior (lds.org) through his birth, life, death, resurrection, and appearance to the American continent. I also went through my own books, pictures, and Ensigns to find other images of the Savior. The council in heaven, creation, and appearance to Joseph Smith. I have seen others who have taken the same idea with 3x4 Greg Olsen cards with a ring through them.

My kids know that when the sacrament in going around that I am going to pull out this folder because it is time to focus on our Savior. My children love it. My 2 year old just wants to show me that he knows who Jesus is by pointing at him in every picture. My 5 year old wants to learn the stories behind the pictures. And I've noticed that as my husband and I have looked through the pictures with them that we are thinking more about him as well.

Gospel Art

I saw a great post here. The Gospel Art Kit costs $30.oo at the Distribution Center. It's great to have visual aids for lessons and scripture study, but you can actually use them as a lesson or scripture study. Our little children sometimes don't have the attention span that we want. Each picture has accounts and descriptions on the back that make for a quick lesson or even family scripture study. Plus, it comes in a convienent blue plastic box to keep it all organized. 160 pictures is enough FHE lessons for over 3 years. You can't beat that!

Latter Day Memory

My sister just sent me this idea and I couldn't wait to share it with everyone...and to make one for my family! A latter day memory game. In this case, I used the Latter Day Prophets, but this would be great with any topic or gospel images. You can get the images here. Just click on Church History for the Joseph Smith picture and General for the remainder (you need to find Pres. Monson elsewhere).

If memory is a little too juvenile for your family, try making it into a "Guess Who" Game! My cousin did this same thing with family members and I thought it would work well for this too. Purchase a new or used "Guess Who" Game and replace their images with those of the prophets. Then make the cards to go with it, and you have a cool game. Married couples could enjoy playing it with trivia questions!

Building the Temple

Cut out this image, fold the edges, and tape the sides to build your own temple. This is great for many lesson types. A lesson on how tithing helps to build temples (kids can use it as a tithing bank), on building a forever family (put hearts with ways we can be together forever inside), and many others.

As a family we are reading the Doctrine & Covenants Stories, and we just learned about the Pearl of Great Price which talked briefly about the Articles of Faith. When we finished, my 5 year old asked to learn more about them.

Yes! My child has specifically asked for me to teach him about the gospel. Now, how to do it.I found this clip art at about.com that specifically follows the articles of faith. The only one I had to change was the image of Gordon B. Hinkley. I found a picture of Pres. Thomas S. Monson and used it in its place. I printed the images and text on card stock, laminated them, punched a hole and put a ring through it. Ta-dah!

He's starting to sound out words, and what better thing to start than on scriptures?
